The philanthropic arm of the Columbus Apartment Association, the CAA Community Assistance Foundation will donate to three charities in 2022. Patches of Light, COMPASS, Hope Hollow and Move to PROSPER. Contributions were presented at the November 17 CAA General Membership Meeting. The Community Assistance Foundation provides financial assistance and materials to charitable organizations in Central Ohio who have missions that support multifamily housing and its residents. The Community Assistance Foundation is funded by donations from CAA members that allow the Foundation to provide much needed assistance to many charities and individuals throughout the Central Ohio community. Patches of Light: Each year thousands of children are diagnosed with life-threatening, life-changing, and often-times fatal illnesses. Many families with critically and terminally ill children are being inundated with the high costs of dealing with these illnesses. Many of the families referred to Patches of Light have one or more parent on an unpaid leave and they find they are unable to pay for even the basic necessities of everyday life. The mission of Patches of Light is to assist families with critically and terminally ill children so they can remain together during their hospitalizations and treatments. Funding is used to pay for past due mortgages, rent and utilities. Patches of Light provides phone, gas and grocery cards and parking vouchers. In addition, Patches of Light assists with emergencies such as auto repairs, housing for long distance care, airline tickets, Ronald McDonald House fees and much more. COMPASS: Since 1982, COMPASS, Congregational Outreach Ministries Program of Assistance & Social Service has been a partnership with over 20 area churches and other groups. COMPASS provides services to prevent homelessness and stall evictions, allowing families to remain in their homes. Clients are assisted with partial rental assistance or utility assistance. COMPASS also refers clients to other agencies in the community. COMPASS also provides Benefit Bank counseling from Franklin County. That includes: ODJFS Applications, and Food Stamp Registration. Hope Hollow: Hope Hollow is a dream come true… supporting persons who are struggling with the disease of cancer as our lives have been deeply affected by this disease. Our story begins when Jane’s mother died of pancreatic cancer when Jane was ten years old and her mother’s sister (a second mother to her) also died of pancreatic cancer. Another maternal aunt (also a mother figure to Jane) suffered from colon cancer. When Jane was diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer in 2007, we received the good news that it appeared to be encapsulated and had not metastasized. In December 2010, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer. After two surgeries and seven weeks of radiation treatment her prognosis appeared to be very promising, due to early detection. We have since prayed and spoken our gratitude daily. We are now living that gratitude by offering welcome, hospitality and hope to persons with cancer who are seeking medical treatment in Columbus, Ohio. Hope Hollow’s mission is to offer lodging, meals, nutritional support, transportation assistance and emotional support…at no cost…to cancer patients and their loved ones, who are financially in need, while on their journey with cancer. It has been said that “strangers are friends we have yet to meet.” In the spirit of caring, we hope to make a positive difference in the lives of those persons we have yet to meet. Move to PROSPER: Move to PROSPER is a three-year program that empowers low-wage families and their children to gain economic security. Our pilot families raised their incomes by 58%, or $17,000 on average, and improved their mental and physical health. We equip families with tools they need to flourish, including career and financial coaching. Our partial rental support enables them to move to neighborhoods with quality housing, better schools, and a safe environment for their children. Working together, Move to PROSPER families set and achieve their personal goals. Move to PROSPER provides: 3 years of rental support, Workshops and programs monthly, Access to safe, quality & healthy housing in an apartment in a higher resourced community, The assistance of a life coach to support reaching financial, career, educational and wellness goals for the entire family, Assistance integrating children into a new school and the family into a new neighborhood. All of these organizations fill a vital need. Each year the Foundation Board hears from many charities seeking assistance and are tasked with the difficult job of narrowing down how the funds are spent. The Foundation dollars are limited, and the Board seeks to put them to the best use and benefit the as many individuals as possible. There are many avenues for you to donate to the Community Assistance Foundation. The CAA has events throughout the year that benefit the Foundation including the upcoming Reverse Raffle which you can read more about throughout this issue. All of the proceeds from the event benefit the CAA Community Assistance Foundation. The CAA Community Assistance Foundation is recognized as a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Your donations are tax deductible. Contact the CAA today to make your donation or to get more information about the charities the Foundation benefits.
